pushing him to the round he tossed a gun from his waist band into a room room. there was a second person. >> there was an individual in that bedroom who clearly saw officer. the officer gave commands not to pick up the gun. the suspect picked up the weapon. the officer gave him command to stop the run. the officer fired a round at the suspect. >> police say they're looking into whether either were involved in gangs. this afternoon, family and friends outside of the home asked we leave the area. this is the 8th officer-involved shooting this year, twice as many as last year and the third highest total since 1996 and community groups say the number is unacceptable and there is an ongoing dialogue with the chief. >> there is a sense of urgency that is uniting communities from different back grounds

so they're backing new legislation aimed at clamping down on pir yag yasy. some companies are not on board. they fear u.s. web sites like you tube, twitter and facebook will be caught in a drag net. legislation called stop online piracy act forcing providers and search engines to cut ties with foreign sites deemed dedicated to piracy. proponents say it's losing tons of money trickling down to blue collar workers and the tech industry cites a study saying if it is passed 200 venture capitolists will cut investments by more than 80% per year. for now the debate had been put on hold until after congress has a holiday break. elsewhere, alec baldwin and other mobile game addicts are out of luck but some pilots are now allowed to use electronic devices. the faa is allowing airline

politics being played out out in a court. the obama administration says it will not defend the ned ral defense of marriage act so a legal advisory group has hired lawyers to defend that law. today both sides presented their argument. abc 7 is live in the newsroom with more. >> that group which is now defending doma is comprised of three republicans and two democrats and says same-sex cup dwrem -- couple who's are legally married in several states are to the entitled to federal benefits, karen was denied health benefits under the defense of marriage act. known as doma. it prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages. >> very to pay a separate policy i'm lucky i can afford

a russian space probe will crash back to earth next month. the space agency says the unmanned probe got stuck in the orbit after the launch and engineers say the fuel on board will burn up on reentry. as much as 440 pounds will come crashing down. at this point no one is sure where. one space craft contains a small amount of radio active cobalt 57. >> a coast guard cutter is home from the war on drugs tonight. it's been on patrol on panama's pacific coast. and it docked this morning and deployment lasted 70 days.
